The most common question  asked during an interview is to ‘describe yourself’ and it can be difficult to know where to start.

  • Introduce yourself: Start by introducing yourself and by giving a brief overview of your background and experience.
  • Give examples to support your strengths: You may give some examples of how your strengths have helped you to achieve something in the previous job. This can help the interviewer see how you could apply them to the job.
  • Talk about your strengths and qualities: Focus on the qualities and core strengths and attributes which make you an excellent fit for the job opening. You may use some words that describe someone’s personality. Like- go-getter, team player, etc.
  • Be real: Be honest and authentic in your response. Avoid reciting a list of generic attributes and narrate about your own traits.
  • Show excitement for the job and the company: Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the job and the company, and explain why you are excited to get the job and grab the opportunity.
  • Give a summarized answer that ties all the traits together: Summarize your response by highlighting all your strengths and experiences that align with the job requirements and how you would contribute to the success of the company after getting the job.

Always remember to practice your response beforehand and be confident in your abilities. By following these tips, you can craft a compelling response that showcases your strengths and makes a strong impression on the interviewer.

Example answers

Here are some examples of answers to the “Describe yourself” interview questions:

  1. “I am a highly motivated and results-driven individual with over 5 years of experience in marketing. I have a proven track record of developing successful campaigns and increasing brand awareness. In my spare time, I volunteer at local charities.”
  2. “I am self-motivated and excited for the opportunity you are giving me and ready to make a positive impact through my experience. Driven by a desire to learn and develop new skills continually, I am always looking for ways to improve my skills with and adopt the latest technological changes that need to be applied in the work.”
  3. “I want a leadership position because I have been working in the profile for the last 10 years and can effectively motivate and inspire a team of developers. I got this confidence in my previous role and I became more confident in my coding abilities. What to avoid when responding to “Describe yourself”  in an interview

When responding to the “Describe yourself” interview questions, it’s important to avoid certain things that could hurt your chances of getting the job. Here are some things to avoid:

  • Avoid generic googled answers: Don’t give a generic or cliched response. Your answers should be unique and related to your personality and not googled ones. Your answers should also be tailored as per the job you’ve applied for.
  • Don’t discuss weaknesses: While it’s important to be honest about your weaknesses, don’t spend too much time discussing them with the prospective employer. Instead, focus on your strengths and talk about them and how you will use them to benefit the company.
  • Don’t be too personal: You need not discuss personal information with the employer. To showcase your personality, avoid sharing eerie personal details with the employer. Only discuss things that are relevant to the job.
  • Avoid being too down to earth: While being humble is important, do not downplay your accomplishments. Underselling your achievements will not make you humble. Be more confident and talk about your strengths and achievements in your previous job.
  • Avoid being too long-winded: Keep your answers crisp and to the point. Going off-topic will make you appear unfocused or unprepared for the interaction.
  • Avoid being negative: Avoid discussing the previous company, work culture, employers, colleagues, or experiences. Instead, focus on positive experiences and what you have learned from challenges.

Always remember, the key to present before a new employer as a strong candidate is by showcasing your confidence, capability, and a good fitment for the job. So, be honest, real, and authentic, and show enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Being too timid:

Being too timid during an interview is not good. It is important to be respectful and professional to the interviewer while being overly cautious or hesitant can give an impression that you need to be more confident in your abilities or it can also be taken as you are not interested in the job.

So, without any fail speak confidently and show enthusiasm for the job opportunity.

Showing too much ego:

Showing too much ego can have detrimental effects on both oneself and others, and it’s important to find a balance between confidence and humility. Showing too much ego while describing yourself in an interview can lower your chances of being hired. While it’s important to showcase your accomplishments and strengths, boasting excessively about yourself can come across as arrogant and unprofessional.

Interviewers are often looking for individuals who are confident but also humble and able to work well with others.

Conclusion

Incorporate these common adjectives while giving an interview. Convert them into action verbs when discussing past projects and increase your chance of getting the job.

While the words you use to describe yourself can be extremely important, the cliche of people remembering not what you say but how you make them feel rings true in your job search.

“Words are important because they paint a picture of us, especially for those who don’t know us…so think of your presence/being as your paintbrush and your words as the color.”
