Resigning from Your Job? Here’s How to Talk to Your Boss Gracefully

By NLB Services

How to inform the manager about a resignation

When you leave a job, it is recommended to maintain a professional relationship with your former employer and colleagues. We will read in this blog about how to discuss further with your boss that you are going to quit the job while preserving the relationship with the previous coworkers you have worked hard to build.

By following the undermentioned steps,  one is more likely to maintain a positive relationship with their previous employer and colleagues after leaving the job position.

How to resign from a job — and avoid these while

By following the steps listed below, it becomes easy to resign from a job in a professional manner:

Inform your manager before other subordinates inform them

Professional courtesy demands letting your manager know about your decision first. You can schedule an in-person meeting with your manager and announce your decision to resign from the position. There is a way to disclose the news meticulously. Do not speak negatively about the job. Keep your tone neutral and professional. By informing your manager much in advance, you are giving them enough time to search for your replacement. When you have decided to quit, your manager would like to know the reason for your decision. You can provide a brief and honest explanation.

Know what to say when you quit your job

If you are wondering how to quit a job gracefully, think of it as dating. Quitting the job is similar to breaking up with your partner. Sometimes you are skeptical and feel terrible about it. Other times you feel pretty elated to move on. At times, you may feel overwhelmingly neutral.

Do you also find yourself contemplating jumping ship on what and how to quit a job? Listen up. Going in a blaze of swear words is never a good idea. By following these methods you can gracefully quit the job.

  1. Consider it as a default approach. Fix a meeting with your manager and explain why you’re leaving, and serve a standard notice period decided by the company.
  2. Leave it on a positive note while showing your gratitude for the period spent in the company. You may say something like, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’ve loved every second of my time spent in (company’s name) and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. I am soon going to join a new position elsewhere. Would love to train my replacement with full commitment.”
  3. There’s another option that you inform HR first, and then ask for someone from the department to be present there when you inform your manager.
  4. No matter how upset you are with your manager or company. Do not use your departure as an opportunity to vent your frustrations about the work. It would not help you accomplish anything. In reverse, it can make people have negative impressions about you.
  5. You haven’t thought of quitting your job. And one fine day, due to the toxic culture or maybe some other reason, with no planning, you decide to put your papers. You did not give any notice period, instead, you just quit. In that case, make sure you have enough bank balance to survive till you get a new job.

Write your resignation letter

Here’s what to include in a resignation letter when you are quitting your job-

Why get stuck on where to start with your resignation letter when we’ve got you covered with the content?

Here’s what you should include in your resignation letter and write a notice to quit a job–

  1. Always start with an introductory sentence that expresses your gratitude for the company, work, and time spent
  2. Write about your last day of employment (end of your notice period) in the company
  3. Add additional information about your learnings, projects accomplished, and skills you’ve built in your tenure with the company
  4. Appreciation for your experiences at the company
  5. If required, an offer to help put together a transition plan for the newest company

Here are some resignation letter templates for your reference.

How to Handle Your Resignation

It is very important to avoid burning bridges when you resign from a company. Leaving on good terms ensures your former employer helps you get a good reference when you apply for new positions. Your manager and co-workers will then remain a part of your professional network. Both can help to land better opportunities in the future.

But first thing first, you should make sure that you actually want to quit the job, then you make a post-employment plan, serve your notice period, inform your manager beforehand, conduct an exit interview with HR, connect with your old colleagues, gather all the necessary documents from HR like – any reimbursement of bills, settlement of investment accounts, health insurance information, unused leaves, etc. before leaving.

Coming to your desk, clean out your workspace and leave it workable for the newcomer. While doing so, don’t forget to pack up your coffee mug, desk plants, and other personal belongings.

Return your IT department belongings and do not give your building-return items to any of your colleagues. Lastly, show some courtesy to your employer. You may also consider wiping down your desk and throwing away the disposable items and de-clutter your desk before leaving.

Key Takeaways

If you are still thinking about how I should inform my boss before resigning. Here are some key takeaways in nutshell from the blog we’ve read above :

  1. Inform your reporting manager before putting in your resignation email.
  2. Serve the complete notice period the employment contract or agreement requires.
  3. It is corporate ethics to quit in person. But if you cannot do so, write a resignation letter and inform over a phone call, followed by an official resignation email, which must include your last day of work. Try to be thankful to the employer.

You might be asked to leave as soon as you resign; pack up your belongings from the desk before you quit.
